Roland kills Cimosque despite his harquebus (Roland furieux Brunet 1775, ch9) - Cochin

Description

Sent by Olympus to Dordrecht, where Cimosque is holding his lover Birene prisoner, Roland kills him (IX, 80) before he can even turn his disloyal weapon, the rifle, against him.    
Roland is on foot, as the first shot has killed his horse (str76-77). The spectators watching the battle from the town's windows are an innovation both in terms of the text and the ancient engravings: they transform the epic performance into a stage device. The restricted space of the stage is delimited by the curb below, by Cimosque's rifle above.
