Balthasar's feast (Boissard, Theatrum vitae humanae) - Th. De Bry

Description

Balthasar, king of Babylon (right under canopy), has ordered a banquet with the tableware from the Jerusalem temple. This banquet is interrupted by a mysterious hand that inscribes on the wall "MANE THETEL (for Thekel) PHARES". Only Daniel could interpret the message: Weighed (your life has been weighed), Counted (your time is counted), Divided (your kingdom will be divided). The next day, the Persians invaded Babylon. The restricted space of the scene is delimited in the center of the engraving by the column and the figure depicted seated from behind at the king's table.
