Bradamante in Merlin's cave (Roland furieux, ch3, 1570)
Notice précédente Notice n°2 sur 6 Notice suivante
Description
Precipitated to the right into the cave where Merlin is buried by the traitor Pinabel, Bradamante is greeted by the magician Mélisse, who evokes before her the illustrious offspring Bradamante will conceive with Roger. On the right, Bradamante falls.
The evocation of Bradamante's posterity is treated in the manner of a medieval banquet, that is, not a scene, but a performance.
The space of the representation is not open: the pillars of the grotto conceal the figures at the banquet, unlike the depiction in the 1562 engraving. The image is not treated from a point of view. It is not a spectacle given to be seen, but an icon enshrined in the tabernacle of its rich frame, in the case of the grotto closed before us.
