Table of precepts for line painting - Testelin

Date :
Entre 1680 et 1696
Type of image :
Gravure sur cuivre
V-2552

Description

The system of brackets is characteristic of a way of thinking in divisions and categories. The diagram at the bottom right is of Albertian origin: it defines the painting as a window, inserted between the eye and the object. The object, represented as curved, constitutes only a limited space in the painting, which therefore stages it from within a frame, a vague space.

History :
  1. At the bottom right of the drawing, “l'œil” (the eye), “le Tableau” (the painting), and “l'Objet” (the object). Below the drawing, “Avec privilege du Roy” (With the King's privilege) and “Luë en l'Academie le 16 fevrier 1675” (Read at the Academy on February 16, 1675).
  2. Sentiments des plus habiles peintres du temps sur la pratique de la peinture (Opinions of the most skilled painters of the time on the practice of painting), Paris, 1680, reprinted in 1696.
