Description
The cyclops Polyphemus is in love with the nereid Galatea, who loves the shepherd Acis. While he remains melancholy and pensive on his rock, no longer having the heart to play his Pan flute, Acis and Galatea in the shadow of a grove of trees where they have spent the night, say goodbye. Amour helps Acis get dressed. On the right, the sun chariot indicates daybreak. A Nereid watches from the sea. The end is tragic. See Ovid, Metamorphoses, XIII, 738sq, reprinted by Marino.
