Down from the ecliptic, sped with hoped success,
Throws his steep flight in many an aëry wheel. (Book III, 739-741)
Satan, dans sa quête de la nouvelle Création de Dieu – l’Homme – vient de découvrir la Terre. Celle‑ci est gardée par Uriel, l’ange régent du Soleil : par la ruse, Satan parvient à le tromper et à s’approcher du paradis terrestre.
