Description

Booklet from the 1750 Salon:

"By M. De La Tour.
109. Several Pastel Heads, under the same Numero."

History :

2. Diderot recounts in the Salon de 1767 that La Tour, worried about the growing success of J. B. Perronneau, a pastel portrait painter like himself, commissioned his portrait from him. While the young Perronneau was preparing La Tour's portrait, La Tour was secretly painting his own self-portrait. The two pastels were exhibited side by side at the Salon of 1751, with La Tour's portrait being the more popular. La Tour's joke is not a glorious one, especially in view of the unfortunate and difficult career that Perronneau ultimately led.
