The glory of Saint-Roch - Falconet

Date :
1755
Type of image :
Sculpture

Description

The golden rays emanating from the stained glass symbolize the operation of the Holy Spirit during the Annunciation. At the bottom, Falconet had sculpted a kneeling Virgin on the left, and an archangel Gabriel descending from the cloud on the right. This group disappeared during the French Revolution. It was replaced by a marble group from the Val de Grâce, commissioned by Anne of Austria in recognition of the birth of her son, the future Louis XIV. The Virgin, Child and Joseph are framed by Saint Jerome and Saint Barbara.
