Description
Booklet from the 1767 Salon:
"By Mr. Doyen, Academician.
67. The Miracle of Ergotism.
In the year 1129, during the reign of Louis VI a fire from Heaven fell upon the City of Paris, & devouring the entrails of almost all the Inhabitants, caused them to experience the most cruel death; through the intercession of St. Genevieve, this plague suddenly ceased.
This Painting, 22 feet high by 12 feet wide, is for the Chapelle de sainte Geneviéve des Ardens in S. Roch."
(This is also almost word for word the starting point of Diderot's long commentary, DPV XVI 256.)
