Alexander at the bedside of Darius' wife - David
Description
Alexander has taken Darius's wife prisoner, but Darius is still eluding him. The young woman died in childbirth. Alexander, who had always treated her with respect, once again showed his generosity by burying her with great pomp. One of the eunuchs guarding the chamber fled to inform Darius: "she was even honored by the tears of her enemies. Alexander is as noble after victory as he is terrible in battle!" Alexander is shown on the right, weeping between two soldiers. The distressed woman in the foreground, slumped at the foot of the dead woman's bed, could be Darius' mother, also Alexander's prisoner.
2. Several cut-out and laminated figures.
This composition dates from David's trip to Italy and predates Debret's lithograph after it, signed "à Rome 1779 ".
