Description

Because of its subject, the St. Petersburg painting can be related to the Iliad hanging begun by Antoine Coypel and continued by his son from 1722 to 1730. 

History :

1. Signed and dated lower right : "Ch. Coypel 1737".

2. Entered the Hermitage in 1919. Former collection A.K. Rudanovsky.

3. A reduced version of the painting, probably a repetition, is preserved at the Musée des beaux-arts de Nancy.
