Description
Engraving by P. L. Surugue after Mme Lenoir's portrait, holding a booklet. Painting exhibited at the 1743 Salon, now lost.
1. Signed and dated below the engraving on the left "J. B. S. Chardin pinxit ", right "L. Surugue sculpsit 1747 ".
Title under signatures centered, "L'INSTANT DE LA MEDITATION ".
Caption under title in two columns of two verses: "Cet amoureux travail, cette lecture aimable | De la sage Philis occupent le loisir, || Quand on saient joindre l'utile à l'agréable | L'innocence est toujours la baze du plaisir. "
2. Collection mark - Bottom left, straddling the square line, " collection Dutuit " (Lugt n°708). Acquired 1902.
