Description
Prometheus taking fire from heaven with bundles of rushes.
1. The engraving is not signed.
2. Opposite the engraving, on the right-hand page, it reads:

DISCOVRS XVIII.
The Ancients tried to make us believe that Man was the work of Prometheus, who only weighed him down with mud, except that he mixed the parts of various animals with this mass. They added that he himself, wishing to defend his work, and to be esteemed both Autheur and Cõservateur of the race of Mortals, secretly ascended to Heaven, carrying with him certain bundles of jong, which he lighted near the chariot of the Sun; and when he returned to Earth, he taught mortals the use of fire. But instead of this good office of Prometheus deserving some effect of recognition among men, they conspired mischievously against him, and accused him before Jupiter.
