How to put the devil back into Hell (Decameron 1757 J3N10) - Boucher
Description
The young Alibech sets off for the desert of Thebaid to serve God. Sent from hermitage to hermitage, she ends up with the young Rusticus, who teaches her to put the devil she carries in the hell she possesses in the same place. Alibech takes such a liking to this that the monk, who feeds only on wild herbs, cannot satisfy her.
Meanwhile, in her town of Gafsa, in Barbary, a fire kills her entire family, making her a wealthy heiress. A penniless suitor, Néherbal, comes forward to marry her. Alibech is very disappointed at first. Her neighbours then laughingly tell her that Néherbal will also be very good at sending the devil back to hell...
