A lady tying her garter, and her maid - Boucher

A lady at her toilette and her maid occupy the space of the scene proper, or restricted space. The lady ties the ribbon of her garter above her knee to hold up her silk stocking. Her maid holds a headdress in her hand (the night cap the lady has just taken off?). The scene is delimited on the right by a mirror, then by a screen, in the center by a glass door, and on the left by a fireplace screen, which has been placed perpendicular to the fireplace so as to diffuse the fire's heat towards the lady. On the front, the boundary continues with objects thrown on the floor: a bellows, a fan, a kind of feather duster that was probably used for powdering. Behind the screen, a portrait on the wall seems to be spying on this intimate scene. Behind the glass door, a curtain perhaps conceals a character. The bellows pass under the duster to penetrate the intimate circle. Finally, the play of shadows reveals a window on the left.
