Description
No scene in the New Testament corresponds to this allegorical representation. Indeed, while the Virgin kneeling under a canopy before the Book is in the position to receive the Annunciation, it's not the archangel Gabriel, but Christ who comes to bless her. This Christ is not the earthly Jesus: naked beneath a red tunic symbolizing the Passion, he bears the stigmata of the Crucifixion, as evidenced by the hole in his left foot, which is ostensibly protruding. Blessing the Virgin with his right hand, carrying the standard of faith with his left, haloed by a luminous cross, he is a fighting Christ.
