Description
The Fountain of Life occupies a full page following the tables of the Canons, as it does in several other Armenian Gospels and some Georgian and Ethiopian manuscripts. In the West, this image adorns two famous works: the Gospel of Charlemagne, copied by Godescale in 781-783, and the 9th-century Gospel of Saint-Médard de Soissons. The symbolic significance of this image is not the same in East and West Carolingian representations evoke above all Baptism, while Eastern examples emphasize the Passion.
