Description
Booklet from the 1757 Salon
"View of the City and the Rade, morning effect. This view is taken from a country house halfway up the mountain behind the city. It depicts the amusements of the inhabitants and the carriage they use to go to the country houses, which are called bastides."
1. Signed and dated: "Peint par Joseph Vernet à Toulon 1756".
2. Belonged to a series of fifteen paintings depicting French seaports commissioned by Louis XV in 1753 and executed from 1754 to 1765. 5th painting in the series. Paid for in 1757: "le Port Vieux et la Rade de Toulon, 2400 écus." Cat. Ingersoll Smouse, no. 645.
3. Version péparatoire, coll. Jules Strauss, Paris. Cat. Ingersoll Smouse, no. 646. Engraving dated 1763.
