It is mentioned by Diderot in the Salon of 1767 :
"Pigalle, throw me down and this skeleton, and this Hercules, as handsome as he is, and this France that intercedes ; lay the marshal in his last resting place, and let me see only these two grenadiers sharpening their sabers against the stone of his tomb that is more beautiful, simpler, more energetic and newer than all your half-history, half-allegoryfatras.
