Description

It can't be Armida facing Rinaldo asleep (B. Debrabandère). Armida has lulled Rinaldo to sleep by a river, by the charms of a mermaid: what does this bed have to do with it? It's more like Tancred asleep, dreaming of Clorinda. Vanloo does not illustrate the text of Jerusalem Delivered, but the scenes to which this text has given rise, particularly in opera. Campra's Tancrède (1st in 1702 at Fontainebleau), for example, contains a dream of Tancred. The nimbus surrounding the female character argues for an apparition, not an encounter.
