Le tableau a d’abord été attribué à Anton Raphaël Mengs.
Pie VI fut pape de 1775 à 1795 : il aurait fait réaliser ce portrait juste après son élection. Il s’agit ici d’une étude, réalisée probablement en présece du Pape.
3. Le portrait officiel se trouve au musée de Rome. Sur le tableau définitif, on peut lire sur le papier la signature « « Alla Santità di N.ro Sig.re Papa Pio VI per P. Batoni Pinxit 1775 ».
