Romulus kills Remus (Gottfried, Hist. Chronica, 1674)
Description
In this version of the legend, the augurs decided that Romulus would found Rome, but Remus did not accept this verdict. As construction work on the city wall began, Remus defiantly tried to jump over the top of the wall. Romulus, furious, killed his brother and exclaimed, “Sic deinde quicumque alius transiliet moenia mea” (So shall it be for anyone else who crosses my walls).
