Recherche infructueuse

A man offers to Marie to kill Rollo (Die Schöne Abellina, t2, 1799)

Description

The action of the novel takes place in Genoa, which is in the grip of political tensions between opposing factions. Wallram, a treacherous man, orders one of his accomplices, Rollo, to bring him Marie, the orphaned daughter of a former leading figure in the city, so that he can indulge his passion for her. As Marie strolls through her garden one evening with her friend Elise and two servants, a man emerges and throws Rollo's expiring body at Marie's feet. He hands her a dagger to kill him, but she, terrified, simply prays for his soul, before the man finally kills him himself.
