Description
During the Battle of Jemmapes, Dumouriez is said to have intoned Rouget de Lisle's song in front of a battalion of young men from Saint-Denis who had not yet seen fire, ready to stampede. Repeating the Marseillaise after him, the young soldiers returned to battle and triumphed.
For this reason, Rouget de Lisle's portrait is printed in the medallion at top right.
