Description
A Franc-Archer strolls through the countryside around Paris, recounting his war exploits. He is first interrupted by the crowing of a rooster, which startles him a little. But he continues on his way. Later, he sees a scarecrow in a goat barn, which he takes to be a policeman threatening him with a crossbow. He begs it not to kill him, to let him go on his way, and confesses in passing that none of his exploits are true. Once he realizes his mistake, he leaves, regretting his moment of weakness.
