Large portrait of Marie-Joseph Chénier (Charles IX, included in 1790 ed.) - Müller after Smolky

Description

The mention "de l'Institut de France" proves that the engraving was inserted after the edition. Chénier was in fact appointed to the Institut in 1795, in whose foundation he had participated. The engraving was probably based on a portrait of Chénier taken on the occasion of this appointment. The engraving makes it possible to identify the author of this portrait, kept at the Musée Carnavalet, inv. P68 : Smolky...

History :

1. Signed on the lower rim of the oval on the left "Smolky del.", on the right "Müller Sculp."

3. Compare with the portrait in the Musée Carnavalet, P68, dated 1795.
