Description
This allegory of justice and freedom is represented on the model of Saint George slaying the dragon, where America is represented by Saint George. The king's daughter promised to the dragon is represented here by two daughters, justice and freedom, already imprisoned in the serpent's rings, on the model of Laocoon's sons.
History :
- Signed and dated upper right "GEORGE BARBIER 1918".
- There is no iconographic model for an allegory of freedom: the artist hijacks the iconography of Saint Georges, perhaps influenced by G. Bofa's drawing in the same issue.
