Description

"Also, right from the start of his career, he was attributed with some pretty nasty, highly impertinent verses that got him put in the Bastille, a harsh punishment for bad rhymes. It was during this enforced leisure that the twenty-two-year-old Voltaire sketched out his pallid poem of the League, from the Henriade onwards, and completed his remarkable drama of Oedipe. After a few months in the Bastille, he was both released and pensioned by the Regent d'Orléans, whom he thanked for taking care of his upkeep, and begged him to stop taking care of his lodgings." (On Voltaire, December 1823)
