Description
John is surmounted by the eagle that is his symbol. The eagle holds a scroll in its talons: the Gospel text. Above the eagle, Solomon unrolls the scroll of his proverbs. Around the eagle, four prophets.
Like the other evangelists John holds on his lap the five books of the pentateuch, on which the gospels are based. With his left hand he holds his vision, he extends his right hand downwards, towards the scribes transcribing his word. John is thus depicted as a mediator.
