God casts out demons from those who are possessed (Vie et Miracles de Jésus Christ, Paris, Jollain, n°19)

Description

The reference given to Matthew's Gospel, "Math. 8 Chap. 19" should actually read: Chap. 8, verses 28-34.

In keeping with Matthew's version, the image depicts two demoniacs from Gadara, one standing on the right, the other kneeling in the center. Facing Christ and his disciples on the left, they let the demons escape from their mouths. In the background on the left, from the mound overlooking the lake, the pigs throw themselves into the water.

On either side of the possessed man kneeling in the center, the composition is symmetrical: the countryside opposes the city, Christ the Savior to the vociferous demoniac. The arrangement of the quatrain's verses reinforces this opposition: on the left (to the right, therefore, of the central possessed), the first two verses evoke God, on the right, the last two verses evoke adversity and lust.

History :
  1. The image is accompanied by the following quatrain:

"Mighty author of nature,
Beautiful mirror of purity,
Esteined by Adversity
In me the fires of lust."
