Description

By placing his full-page portrait at the head of this collection of scores, which contains The Four Seasons, Vivaldi confers on these pieces a central and monumental status in his work.

Yet the portrait seeks to stand apart from an official portrait: the shirt collar is untied, the musician holds an unfinished score in his hands, the quill and inkwell on the table indicate that he is about to set to work. Or perhaps this work he is publishing is just the beginning...

In 1725, Vivaldi was 47 years old.
