2. According to Ponsonailhe the subject sketch would have been by Jean de Troy, the landscape background would have been painted by Charmeton after de Troy's death. Antoine Ranc would have finished the lower part, i.e. the figures.
There is a dynasty of Charmeton painters in Lyon. Which one is this? The most famous is Georges Charmeton (1623-1673), an academician. It could be his nephew André (1670-1722), or more likely his two sons, Jean I and Jean II, who were born after the work was completed...
