Tobit burying the dead - Andrea di Leone

Date :
Entre 1640 et 1650
Type of image :
Peinture sur toile
1989.225

Description

In the 1640s, Neapolitan painter Andrea di Lione traveled to Rome, where he met Nicolas Poussin and Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, a painter famous for his imaginary architectures and pastoral landscapes. The pronounced classicism of this work - with its antique architecture and blond hue - is indebted to the influence of these artists. The veiled figure on the left is Tobit, a devout Jew deported to Nineveh. Tobit defies King Sennacherib's decree forbidding Jews to be buried within the city walls. The bodies were thrown over the walls of Nineveh. Tobit retrieves the bodies and piously buries them.
