Description
Baccio Bandinelli (1493-1560), Michelangelo's rival sculptor, founded his academy in Florence around 1550: we recognize him by his long beard at the far right of the composition, observing the work of his pupils busy drawing. The cross of the Order of St. James, awarded to him by Emperor Charles V, can be seen on his chest. In the bric-a-brac of the studio are carelessly discarded books, antiques, skeletons - all objects that attest to the fact that his teaching was not solely technical.
