Description

A typical example of bambochade, which portrays the Romans in their least flattering light. During his early years in Rome, Lingelbach stayed on this very street, perhaps in this inn. Through the upstairs pantry, jutting out from the facade, an occupant observes the street. Sitting on the staircase step, a seller of ciambella (a ring-shaped cake) also spins a girella, a lottery wheel prohibited in Rome at the time. Sitting on the same step, in the right foreground, an old man repairs the shoe of a boy sitting on the floor. The entrance to the inn is blocked by a blind musician playing guitar: next to him, a boy sings and a young woman watches him.
But the figure who first catches the eye because of his red coat is a man in an elegant velvet suit, holding gloves in his hand, carrying a pistol. With his hat pulled down over his eyes, surveying his surroundings, watched with concern by the little singer, he is probably a mercenary belonging to one of the gangs that then shared control of the city's neighborhoods.
At the far left a couple in Spanish costume walk past fighting dogs.
As for the peasant watching us, it's hard to tell what he's selling in his basket...
