Description

A Landscape adorned with Factories and Ruins; seen in the front are several Hunters, mounted on their horses, at the door of an Inn, one holding a glass of wine in his hand appears to be conversing with his companion, a third is seated near them; Sheep are seen on the opposite side, various masses of Landscape enrich the next Plane, & Mountains finish the background.
This painting, of a pleasant site, combines vigorous color with perfect harmony. Height 24 inches, width 25 inches. T. (Catalogue de la vente du Cabinet de feu M. Baudouin, 1786, n°14)

History :

2. Former collection of the officer in the king's guards Sylvain-Raphaël de Baudouin, known as the Comte de Baudouin, Paris;
Catherine II acquired the painting in 1781, through the intermediary of Frédéric Melchior Grimm, for her then lover, Alexandre Lanskoï (Between 1781 and 1784, Baudouin sold Catherine II for the sum of 230,000 livres 115 of the 118 paintings he owned);
The painting entered the Hermitage on Lanskoï's death in 1784.
