Crispin, rival of his master (Lesage, Selected Works, 1810, vol. 12) - Marillier

Description

Old Oronte on the right, is being duped by Crispin, on the left, dressed as a petit-maître because he's pretending to be Damis, and assisted by La Branche, the latter's valet.

Crispin has led Oronte to believe that he's about to buy land near Chartres that will bring in a lot of money. He persuades Oronte to lend him the money for this investment.

History :

    Caption: "Ho, ho, ho, ho: cela est tout à fait plaisant."
  2. In the 1739 edition, followed by the LP, this is the end of scene 15 (p. 71)
