The Curtius Wax Salon (Scenes from the Palais-Royal..., no. 50)

Date :
1790
Type of image :
Gravure sur cuivre
RESERVE FOL-QB-201 (123)

Description

Wax figure cabinets.
The first and oldest is that of citizen Curtius, boulevard du Temple, next to the Sans-Prétention theater. This artist, who modeled on nature, has died, and his widow runs the cabinet.
The second is that of citoyen Orsy, sculptor, whose studio is located at porte et boulevard Saint-Martin, at the former Opéra hall. He models first in clay, then in marble and wax, from life, a painting or a drawing. He excels in truth of complexion and naturalness of attitude.
The other cabinets of this kind that may exist in Paris, are branches of these two, or can hardly, therefore, interest the amateur.
