Description
Mendoce, who was unaware of her happiness, and who, far from believing himself loved by her, hardly dared to admit to himself that he was in love with her, had spent the night without sleeping, and, before daylight, had come to this wood where the Countess was. He was walking aimlessly, and chance led him into one of the alleys that led to the cabinet where she was: he entered it. It was turned in such a way that he walked past it, unnoticed, to see that she was holding a portrait, which appeared to him to be that of a young man. He did not recognize himself in it; and even if he had known that there was a portrait of him in the world, he would not have imagined that it was in the Countess's hands, nor that he gave it the passionate attention he easily noticed in her...
