Description
Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes was a fervent supporter of historical landscapes: in particular, he was one of the instigators of the creation in 1816 of a Prix de Rome for historical landscapes. It is to this genre that this painting belongs, in which the artist depicts the death of Pliny the Elder, who, having wanted to get close to the mountain to see the eruption of Vesuvius, was punished for his reckless curiosity, and died asphyxiated by the smoke.
