Description
Dominique was the Harlequin of the Italian comedians of Paris until his death in October 1689. He was succeeded by Évariste Gherardi.
History :
- Signed below the engraving on the left "Ferdinand pingebat" on the right "N. Habert Sculpebat" (sic!)
In a circle on the frame: "HARLEQUIN JOSEPH DOMINIQUE NÉ A BOULOGNE EN ITALIE". - The portrait was probably painted by Ferdinand when the artist died, in October, just before the painter's death in December. The engraving, if made for Gueulette's Histoire du théâtre italien was produced in 1734 or later.
