The Dying Clown (Drawing for Mr. Pickwick, 1837 ed.) - Seymour

Description

History :

2. Robert Seymour was working on this illustration for The Pickwick Papers at the time of his death. On April 14, Seymour received a letter from Dickens "congratulating you, the editors and myself on the success of this undertaking" and asking him to make changes to his engraving "The Dying Clown" for the next issue. Sadly, six days later, Seymour committed suicide, leaving a letter to his wife in which he asked her not to blame anyone, as "it is my own weakness and infirmity. I don't think anyone has been a malicious enemy to me.... I hope that my Creator will grant me the peace, which I have prayed for so long in vain."
