Description
History :
- Signed and dated lower right: "Brueghel 1621".
- Belongs to a commission from Federico Borromeo, Cardinal of Milan. In October 1621, Brueghel was still working on L'Air, commissioned in 1613, unless it was L'Eau, and he wrote in February 1622 that he had finally shipped it to Milan (cf. Crivelli): the painting thus joins the other 3 in the series, delivered to Borromeo as early as before 1618, with no explanation for such a late delivery. Placed in the Palais de Saint-Cloud under the First Empire. The Louvre writes: "not taken over by Austria after 1815".
- Compare with the earlier version on canvas, preserved in Lyon.
