Description

This watercolor depicts the British ambassador (probably Henry Grenville), dressed in a fur-lined yellow robe, at an audience with Sultan Mustafa III (b. 1716, Sultan from 1754 to 1774) at the Topkapi Palace in Constantinople, i.e. the official residence of the Ottoman Sultan. Incongruously, the ambassador and his entourage always wear their tricorn hats and bouffant wigs with their Turkish robes.
The sultan wears a turban that stands out from the rest by incorporating the sorguç, an expensive decoration composed of feathers and jewels.

History :

3. Counterpart to RCIN 917142, depicting the ambassador's meeting with the grand vizier, which took place before his meeting with the sultan and for which the ambassador wore English court costume.
