Description
The painting is inspired by the legend of the transport of the House of the Virgin to Loreto, which then became the first Marian shrine in the West. The popular figure of the Madonna di Loreto was celebrated there.
By the appearance of the brick under the plaster of the wall (on the right above the pilgrims), Caravaggio evokes the relic of the holy House of Loreto, said to have been brought back from the Holy Land at the end of the XIIIth century, according to Pietro Giorgio Tolomei's account.
