Description
The plague took place in 1092.
In 1092, the county of Flanders and Tournai, its religious capital, were desolated by an epidemic of ergotism, which came to be known as the "plague". This was not the real plague, which would come later, but a disease linked to the consumption of spoiled rye, which decimated the population. Divine retribution was believed to be the order of the day. The faithful flock to the mother church of the diocese to invoke the protection of the Virgin Mary, whom they venerate under the name of Our Lady of the Sick.
But it's not the great Tournai procession, which will become an annual ritual, that is depicted here. It is, a much rarer image, the burial of the dead.
