The Story of King Yftikhar (Thousand and One Nights, Manchester ms, p124)

Description

The two daughters of King Yftikhar. The one on the left, in simple turban with knotted hair, is probably the younger. The one on the right, with an imposing headdress and braids, is undoubtedly the eldest.

The scene takes place in the palace. King Yftikhar has just announced the following to his daughters: "A great event has befallen us, which we can only face with wisdom and patience. We have received news that a powerful enemy is heading for our kingdom, and we are in danger if we don't act quickly." The king must leave to organize the defense of the kingdom. He leaves his daughters alone in the palace "with trusted guards". The two daughters left alone hold a council: the eldest daughter asks the youngest what she thinks.
