The Death of Adelaide (Baculard d'Arnaud, Le comte de Comminge, L'Esclapart, 1764) - Massard d'arpès Marillier

Description

Adélaïde, disguised as a monk to follow her friend the Count of Comminge to the abbey of La Trappe, dies surrounded by him, the Chevalier d'Orvigni - in secular vestments - the Father Abbot, and all the monks of the abbey, who look rather like ghosts because of the white casts covering their faces. In the background, the tall columns indicate that the figures are in the abbey's underground, more specifically where, every day, the monks literally dig their pits in order to be buried when they die.
