Description
The Château Pierre-Scize or Pierre Encise was built between the 10th and 12th centuries. From the 15th century, the château was transformed into a state prison. In the 2nd half of the 18th century and until 1780, the château was commanded by André de Bory. It was he who incarcerated Sade after the Auteuil scandal.
The château was demolished in October 1793.
History :
2. Marlow stayed in Lyon during his European trip of 1765-1766. As usual, he produced a pen-and-ink drawing (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum) that served as the basis for several versions of this composition, of which this is the original.
