Batilde, cul-de-lampe (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol1) - Massard after Eisen

Description

This allegorical cul-de-lampe seems to illustrate the virtue of Batilde, who became the wife of Clovis II despite her love for Archambaud, mayor of the Neustrian palace. Preferring duty to passion, she dies in the very reputation of sanctity.
